The Quality Assurance Procedures

The English Department has a variety of procedures in place to ensure that the quality of the teaching and learning across the Department remains consistent and meets the Learning and Teaching Performance Indicators from How Good is Our School? The following procedures are applied in the Department.

  • Use of course outlines and programmes of work at 5-14, Standard Grade and Higher Still Curricula.
  • Cross-moderation of work at 5-14, Standard Grade and Higher Still Unit Assessments.
  • Cross-moderation and sampling of Examination scripts.
  • Classroom visits by Principal Teachers - often information as part of the daily routine.
  • Ethos visits - positive discipline, pre-course and pre-examination visits, support system in place of indiscipline.
  • Monitoring of pupil jotters and work - reinforcement of covering of jotters and presentation of work.
  • Sampling of pupil folios and essays.
  • Closure training days.
  • SQA Markers within the Department.

Classroom observation and monitoring will be carried out by the Senior Management Team and are organised on a faculty basis and will focus on the priorities of the school plan. The visits will be arranged and carried out in accordance of the agreed procedures.
