Additional Support Needs

Initial referrals of pupils with additional support needs come from primaries and previous schools.  However, pupils can also be referred at any time and support strategies put in place as needs arise. Our aim is to promote equality and transparency in the service, and ensure communication with everybody concerned in supporting learning is as quick and clear as possible.

Examples of types support available in school

  1. Support for dyslexic type difficulties
    1. Alpha-smart and/or use of lap-top computer
    2. S1 Reading Recovery programme and or spelling support (short term)
    3. Teacher consultation re adaptation of materials
    4. Reader / scribing support in class and for assessments (limited availability)
    5. Homework Club for supported study
  2. Support for emotional and behavioural type difficulties
    1. Short term withdrawal to Pupil Support Base to get pupils ‘back on track’
    2. Behavioural targets with incentives attached
    3. Crucial Skills programme behaviour management (short term)
    4. Time out arrangement and additional guidance
    5. In-class support to keep on task
    6. Lunch Club
  3. Support for autistic type difficulties
    1. In class support to keep on track
    2. Teacher consultation re adaptation of materials
    3. Lunch Club to support social vulnerability
    4. Advice from ASIST on how best to support pupils
  4. Support for sensory impairment
    1. Consultation and advice re adaptation of materials
    2. IT and technological support
    3. In-class support
    4. Access to advice and expertise from the sensory support service
  5. Physical and mobility impairment
    1. Assistant support in class and corridors
    2. Lunch Club and refectory support

This list is not exclusive and support options are arranged as needs arise. Pupil Support Teachers also coordinate support from partner agencies, for example, drug and alcohol abuse services, educational psychology, integrated community schools etc.
