Department Facilities

The Chemistry laboratories are situated on the first floor of the Science Block. Each Chemistry teacher has his or her own room with responsibility for the learning environment therein.

The technician's bases are located on the first and second floor. There is a chemical store on the second floor technician's base. Most kits are stored in the Chemistry storeroom (first floor) as is reserve glassware.

There is one telephone within the department situated in C3, extension 4453.

Resources

Every Chemistry course has been set up as resource based. As such all chemicals for the unit are stored in plastic containers and are ordered through the technicians when required. Each lab is equipped with basic apparatus necessary for the teaching of Science.

IT Resources

The department has an ever-increasing stock of videos, DVDs and downloads. Some of these are directly linked to the course; others are of general interest. The department has six video/DVD players and TVs.

There are eight computers and five printers in the department. There is a small collection of CD ROMs available and reviews of these are currently being prepared.

The department has access to one Apple Mac for use in word processing.

Equipment

In addition to the basic lab apparatus the department also has a selection of other equipment:

  • balances
  • pH meters and electrodes
  • spot galvanometer
  • colorimeters
  • fume cupboards
  • oven
  • quickfit glassware
  • displays of oil products, corrosion

Paper Resources

The department subscribes to the Royal Society of Chemistry and receives its publications on a regular basis. These are stored in the tutorial room.
