Departmental Aims
Physics is an exciting field. The breadth of activity, the speed of innovation and the impact of new technology can lead to dramatic changes in our lives. The Department of Physics at Queen Anne High School aims to be at the forefront of learning, teaching and attainment in Physics at Secondary level.
The majority of pupils who study Physics in school will not become professional Physicists, Scientists or Engineers. Most will enter courses of study or occupations that do not require a qualification in Physics for entry. The aims of the department, therefore, take account of the contribution that a study of Physics can make to the general education of the citizen of the future.
In all courses pupils should realise the social, economic and industrial relevance of Physics. The country as a whole is facing a shortage of the skills and expertise that are developed in the study of Physics and, therefore, pupils must be encouraged to acquire these skills. This will aid many pupils in the acquisition of secure employment. The increase in use of technology means it is essential that all pupils have a good understanding of common topics such as electricity and electronics, while acquiring the knowledge enabling them to make informed comments on the global issues such as nuclear power, health and the greenhouse effect.
The logical and mathematical nature of Physics creates a competence in these areas, which are required by professions ranging from accountancy to law.
It is hoped that after a study of Physics, students will want to take an interest in the development of our knowledge of the physical world, be it in developing technology or progress in our understanding of the universe.
The general aims of the department are:
- To stimulate pupils and create and sustain their interest in the physical principles that permeate their everyday lives.
- To help pupils to develop some knowledge and understanding of:
- the applications of Physics
- the vocabulary of Physics
- the importance of physical principles.
- To help pupils to develop skills required for problem solving through experimental investigation.
- To aid pupils gain expertise in the application of mathematics..
- To encourage pupils to apply their knowledge, understanding and skills to familiar and unfamiliar situations.
- To give pupils experience in the use of high technology systems such as computer interfaces and data acquisition systems.
- To respond to the needs of pupils with special needs quickly, tactfully and appropriately.
- To encourage pupils to develop a mature attitude and approach to study and work and encourage positive social interaction.
- To create, within the department, an atmosphere which will expose all pupils to appropriate learning experiences and which will encourage learning.
- To enhance the repertoire of study skills of students of all abilities.
- To build a working relationship, for the interchange of ideas, information and techniques, with other departments within the school.
- To help pupils reach their full potential and attain the level best suited to their aptitudes, interests, commitments and needs in SQA examinations and national units.
- To continue to develop strategies for effective teaching and learning.
