Fieldwork in Geography
The Geography Department recognises that fieldwork as a key way to carry out geographical enquiry in the real environment. It gives all pupils the opportunity to observe features and gather information first hand, in an active manner, often working with others. Hence, it enhances both their understanding of the subject and their personal and social development. Pupils also enjoy working outside the classroom and so motivation is increased.
Regular fieldwork activities occur in the department.
- S1 pupils are annually given an opportunity to visit The Royal Highland Show to help them fully develop their investigating skills and learn about Scottish framing.
- In S2 pupils carry out an environmental quality survey in the school grounds.
- S3 pupils can visit Aberfoyle and the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park to find out about the impact of tourism and conservation on the countryside.
- The department has to date organised 2 very successful residential fieldtrips to Switzerland for S4 pupils and hopes to do so again in the near future.
- Over the last few years' Higher candidates have visited Dundee to extend their enquiry skills and knowledge of Urban Studies. They are also given the opportunity to hear the Christmas lecture in the Geography Department of Dundee University
- Fieldwork is a compulsory element of Advanced Higher and pupils are given an opportunity to extend their practical field work skills on a residential course to Kindrogan Outdoor Centre near Blairgowrie.
