Course Outlines
The department currently presents the following courses.
S1
Common course for all pupils in line with the 5-14 guidelines for Design and Make and Technology. The course comprises:
- Design and Make. This involves 1 period a week based on developing pupil skills in designing, woodwork, metal work, and an optional plasticwork exercise. It also develops pupils' knowledge and understanding of the tools, processes, safety issues, and materials used in the course.
- Electronics. Pupils investigate electronic circuits and components then complete problem solving exercises. This unit lasts for approximately 8 periods. A further 4-8 periods involve working on electronic simulation using the computers.
- Graphics. This involves an introduction to presentation graphics, more formal technical drawing, and computer graphics.
S2
Common course for all pupils in line with the 5-14 guidelines for Design and Make and Technology. The course comprises:
- Design and Make. This involves 4 periods based on developing pupil skills in designing (This is completed before the summer holidays), then a further 8 periods to construct the model they have designed.
- Control systems. Pupils use the computers to simulate systems based around microcontrollers using flow charts to write the control programs.
- Graphics.This develops the pupils' skills in more formal technical drawing.
Theses course elements are scheduled to be completed before the pupils make their choices for Standard Grade courses. Residual time before the pupils progress into S3 is used at the discretion of the teacher to complete any unfinished exercises or give more breadth or depth to the pupils' understanding or abilities in any area of the course.
Standard Grade
The department offers Standard Grade courses in:
- Craft and Design.
- Graphic Communication.
- Technological Studies.
Intermediate 2/ Higher/ Advanced Higher
The department offers the following courses to the senior school:
- Int1/2 Practical Woodworking skills
- Int2 Graphic Communication
- Higher/INT2 Product Design
- Higher Graphic Communication
- Higher Technological Studies
- Advanced Higher Technological Studies
