Raising Attainment And Target Setting
Raising attainment is a national priority and is central to all that we do at Queen Anne High School. We are committed to ensuring that every young person in our school community reaches their potential and develops into an active and effective member of society.
Benjamin Franklin said "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail."
In order for them to achieve this success, we encourage them to plan strategies for their own personal growth and take responsibility for their own learning. Each student sets themselves SMART targets in their personal and social development and in every subject.
- Specific
- the goals are clearly defined
- Measurable
- how will these goals be monitored?
- Achievable
- the goals set are attainable
- Realistic
- the goals are practical
- Time based
- a date by which these goals will be achieved is decided
These targets are then discussed with their teachers and reviewed regularly. The steps they will take to get there are as important as achieving the target.
Students are reminded that:
- The goal shapes the plan
- The plan shapes the action
- The action achieves the results
- The results bring success
The evaluation process is a crucial part of the target setting procedure. Adjustments may be required but they should always be viewed positively. Nothing is more effective when it comes to reaching potential than a commitment to personal growth, to keep learning, growing and improving. Teachers will provide feedback on a pupil's strengths and weaknesses but it is the pupil who remains the most important person in the target-setting process.
We encourage parents/guardians/carers to discuss the setting and evaluation of targets with their children. This encourages a meaningful partnership between home and school.
As a further strategy we are hoping to more fully involve and engage with parents and carers by providing a more regular feedback via Pupil Updates and Pupil Progress Reports. These will add to the main reporting system and the Parents Evenings as an additional way of giving more regular information about all pupils in the school. These additional updates and reports will provide targets and indications of whether pupils are on or below the targets set.
All raising attainment and target setting strategies fully involve teachers and pupils, and these further communications will seek to bring parents and carers more into the decision making processes and keep them informed as to their child’s progress.
