Sensory Impaired Service
Pupils with a sensory impairment sufficient for them to be considered as having "special educational needs" will work very closely and often under the direction of the sensory impaired service. This service has responsibility for pupils in mainstream education who have significant sensory impairment (sight and hearing) and who may require assistance, advice or special concessions from the Scottish Qualifications Authority for national examinations.
The school aim is to include all pupils as fully as possible into mainstream courses by providing classroom assistance from specially trained staff. Pupils will also receive back-up support within the sensory impaired unit.
The service makes use of modern technology to facilitate effective learning and teaching for all the pupils that it works with in collaboration with subject specialists. There is very close liaison between the pupils, parents, the sensory impaired support staff and Fife Education Service education advisers in the Auchterderran Centre. Each pupil will have an annual review attended by all key workers at which future learning needs will be determined and planned for.
Currently the department has a Principal Teacher and three part-time teachers from the Fife Service for Sensory Impairments.
